Born in Kyoto, he joined Nintendo as a sound designer in 1980 and made the sound effects of Donkey Kong; credited as “Hip Tanaka”, he composed for many NES games and programmed sound drivers in 6502 and Z80 assembly. He left Nintendo to keep writing music for the Pokémon anime and joined Creatures Inc., which he led as president from 2001 to 2023. He is also known as Chip Tanaka.
